An environmental impact assessment (EIA) prepared by Akkuyu NPP JSC, which is the general customer and investor of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, was submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning on Tuesday for review.

Turkey's first nuclear power plant project, Akkuyu NPP, is set to be built in the province of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast. Its shareholders include Rosenergoatom OJSC, Inter RAO UES JSC, Atomstroyexport JSC, Atomenergoremont OJSC and Atomtekhenergo JSC.

According to the announcement made by Akkuyu NPP, the report, which consists of 12 sections and is 3,000 pages long, includes explanations defining the project and its purpose. In addition, it includes detailed information regarding the plant's social and economic impact, its physical, biological and socio-economic characteristics and how it will utilize natural resources.

Furthermore, concerns over earthquakes, seawater temperature, the cleaning of waste and the effect on agriculture and animal husbandry as well as water, soil and air conditions were also addressed with the inclusion of scientific research and surveys. The report will be reviewed by a board with members appointed from universities and public institutions. The ministry is set to make a final decision about the construction of the plant based on the board's and public opinion.
