Enel SpA (ENEL.MI) said Thursday it has reached an agreement with Italy 's environment ministry that allows it to invest EUR300 million in projects aimed at reducing pollution in an industrialized area in the south of the country.

In a statement, Enel said it will invest in projects in the area around the city of
Brindisi , which also covers the utility's large coal-run Federico II power plant.

The facility has a capacity of more than 2,600 megawatts, meeting about 5% of
Italy 's electricity demand, and it is one of Enel's biggest. Its bunkers can hold 750,000 metric tons of coal.

Enel will invest up to EUR300 million, of which EUR60 million has already been spent, by 2013. Projects include upgrading the coal mills and carbon dioxide emissions sequestration.
