Greek Watchdog sees Distortion in Oil Production and Transport (03/10/2006)

Distortion and wrongdoing in every stage of oil production and transport resulting to much higher pre-tax oil prices sees the Greek Competition Committee in a report published on Monday. Gasoline and petroleum pre-tax prices are up to 105% higher than the average prices in the European Union countries. However, the lower oil taxes at home counterbalance the big difference and the final prices are lower than those in the rest of Europe. Small number of refiners, lack of wholesalers in the commercial stage, along with the higher final prices imposed by gas stations which represent an exclusive brand, are cited. The loose legal framework is also blamed, given that it deters large scale oil imports which would enhance competition among producers.
