The Public Power Corporation (PPC) said Friday it has signed an electricity exchange agreement with Albanian Power Corporation as part of plans to regulate energy between the two countries. PPC is looking to expand its operations into the Balkans as part of plans to offset growing competition at home following a deregulation law passed last year allowing industrial consumers to choose suppliers. PPC will provide night-time electricity to Albania through February 2007 in exchange for Albanian hydroelectric-generated power during the June-August peak summer period, the company said in a statement. PPC will provide KESH, as the Albanian company is known, with 60,000 MWh of power, while Greece will receive 50-100 MW of power for backup in the summer, PPC said. The two sides also agreed to investigate further cooperation activities such as the possibility of PPC undertaking the upgrade and development of Albania’s electricity network, the statement said.
