As the government unveiled its willingness to ratify the controversial Kyoto Protocol, experts yesterday warned that lengthy negotiations with the United Nations (UN) were on the horizon because of Turkey's “special circumstances.”
Addressing a UN panel earlier this week, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey would consider accession to the Kyoto Protocol only if its special circumstances were acknowledged. Experts said negotiations at the UN platform would be the optimal way forward although this would take many years.
The approval of the Kyoto Protocol designed to curb greenhouse gas emissions appears to be inevitable for Turkey since this is an issue the country will confront not only at the UN platform, but also in the European Union.
