Spain's government would probably seek to stop France's Suez SA from increasing its stake in Spain's Gas Natural SDG SA, Expansion reports, citing comments made by industry minister Joan Clos.

Clos told journalists that the Spanish government will watch closely any possible consolidation moves by Suez in Spain, following the completion of its announced merger with Gaz de France SA.

Barcelona-based savings bank La Caixa is Gas Natural's top shareholder, with a 33% stake. Spanish-Argentine oil company Repsol YPF SA owns a 30.9% stake, while Suez SA owns a 11.4% stake.
