Kazakhstan produced 6,637 metric tons of uranium in 2007, up from 5,281 tons a year earlier, Kazakh state nuclear fuel company Kazatomprom said Wednesday.
The company said in a statement that the figure for last year's production includes Kazatomprom's uranium output as well as its joint ventures. Uranium production rose 21.5% on the year in 2006, the company said.
Kazakhstan plans to produce 9,600 tons this year, Kazatomprom said. The natural resources-rich ex-Soviet nation aims to raise uranium production to over 15,000 tons by 2010 and become the top uranium producer in the world.
