Halliburton Co. (HAL) is not trying to evade U.S. sanctions on Iran by setting up a second headquarters in the United Arab Emirates, the company's chief executive was cited as saying.
"These assumptions and suppositions are absolutely untrue," David Lesar told Dubai-based monthly Commerce in an interview to be published Jan. 31.
Halliburton, the Houston-based oil contractor previously headed by Dick Cheney, last March announced that it would open a second headquarters in Dubai, a tax-free sheikdom in the U.A.E., as it plans to expand business in the Middle East and Eastern Hemisphere region.
The move was criticized by U.S. Democrats as a gimmick to avoid paying taxes and raised concerns that U.S. oil giants may abandon Houston.
Lesar said last May on a visit to Dubai that the plans for a second headquarters were driven by the company's growing ambitions in the Middle East and Eastern Hemisphere region as it targets $80 billion worth of projects over the next five years.
"The Eastern Hemisphere is a market that is more heavily weighted toward oil exploration and production opportunities, and growing our business here will bring more balance to Halliburton's overall portfolio," Lesar said in the interview.
