Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will Friday offer an alternative route to the OAO Gazprom-led (GAZP.RS) Nord Stream gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, but could also seek to join the project itself.
In an interview published in Wednesday's Kommersant daily, Tusk said he would propose that the pipeline run over-ground through the Baltic region and Poland, rather than beneath the Baltic Sea as under the current plan. He said this would be two or three times cheaper.
Tusk also said he had discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel the possibility of Poland joining the Nord Stream project and may raise the issue during his meeting in Moscow Friday.
Tusk added that he doesn't expect any firm decisions to made during that meeting.
