E.ON AG's (EOA.XE) Chief
Executive Wulf Bernotat Monday renewed his calls for a review of Germany's
planned gradual end to nuclear power generation.
"The nuclear exit of a highly developed country such as Germany isn't comprehensible in other
countries," Bernotat said at the "2nd Annual Energy Congress" in
Essen.
A broad energy mix is needed to secure future supply amid rising demand and challenging
climate protection targets, he said.
"We need all (energy sources), including renewable energies, nuclear,
clean coal," Bernotat said.
He added that the existing nuclear power stations in Germany help prevent the emission
of around 160 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Germany
is in the process of gradually shutting down all its nuclear power plants by
around 2021. The nuclear exit is controversial and nuclear power plant
operators such as E.ON and RWE AG (RWE.XE) have repeatedly called for an
extension to the operating lives of nuclear reactors. Both companies are
seeking to participate in building new nuclear projects abroad.
