RWE AG (RWE.XE), Germany's largest power producer by generation capacity, Wednesday said it plans to invest around EUR67 million to modernize a gas-fired power plant in western Germany.
RWE Power, the company power generation unit, will invest around EUR40 million modernizing the control center of the Gersteinwerk power plant in Hamm-Werne, with work to be completed in 2011.
Another EUR27 million will be invested in installing new underground gas pipelines to reduce the plant's fuel procurement costs, RWE said. These works should be finished in summer 2009, RWE Power said.
The Gersteinwerk power plant consists of three blocks and has a total capacity of just under 1.3 gigawatts.
RWE also operates a gas and coal-fired power plant at the Gersteinwerk location, which has a total capacity of 770 megawatts.
