A U.K. government minister will call Wednesday for a huge expansion of the country's nuclear power, The Guardian reports.
In a speech to be delivered later, Business Secretary John Hutton will argue the U.K.'s nuclear program should go beyond replacing the existing stock of 23 reactors, which provide 20% of the country's energy. Instead nuclear should contribute "a significantly higher proportion" of the nation's energy needs in the years ahead, and the U.K. should aim to become a world leader in the development of nuclear power technology.
Hutton will predict a GBP20 billion economic bonanza that will create 100,000 new jobs and benefit the U.K. economy as much as North Sea oil
