Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said at the weekend that two more units will be built at the Afsin-Elbistan coal-fired power plant, the Ihlas News Agency, or IHA, reported.
"We found new coal reserves and thus new E and F thermal units will be constructed," he said at a meeting in the city of Kahramanmaras.
Turkish state-run electricity producer Elektrik Uretim AS, or EUAS, said at the end of January it had opened a new tender for the construction of the C and D thermal units at Afsin-Elbistan, along with the rehabilitation of existing units.
The C and D units will each have a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts.
The A and B units generate nearly 15% of Turkey's total electricity consumption. Unit A has a capacity of 1.355 GW and unit B operates with 1.44 GW.
Guler didn't elaborate on the possible capacity or cost of units E and F.
