Renewable energy accounted for 19.8% of Spain's electricity production last year, ahead of 17.8% coming from nuclear energy, the Industry Ministry said late Tuesday.
Renewables accounted for 7% of primary energy demand in Spain in 2007. The government targets 12% of energy consumption to come from renewable sources in 2010.
Out of a total of 34,794 megawatts of renewable energy production capacity, 18,373 megawatts came from hydroelectric power, 15,110 from wind energy, 785 megawatts from biomass and about 500 megawatts from solar energy, the ministry said.
Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola Renovables SA (IBR.MC) is the world's biggest wind-power generator.
