Enel SpA (ENEL.MI) Chief Executive Fulvio Conti Tuesday said the Italian utility was looking at boosting power production from Albania through coal and nuclear power plants.
Conti told a radio show that Enel was already working on a coal plant in Albania and was looking at boosting its presence in the country "also through nuclear plants," but said this was part of a longer-term plan.
Albania's Prime Minister Sali Berisha last month said his country stood ready to build nuclear plants on its territory together with Italy. The move came after the Italian government said it would end a two-decade old ban on nuclear power to reduce its costly dependence on oil, and that it would aim to build new plants by 2013.
