Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday that the new wide-ranging agreement between Russia and the European Union should be a long-term one.

Medvedev said at a press conference after the official meeting that the pact should be comprehensive, but without going into too much detail.

He said it should be a pact that will allow for strategic development of the relationship between the two sides in the areas including economy, investment, innovation, culture, and legal issues.

At the same time, Medvedev said there are several obstacles that hinder the relations, chief among them a tendency of some E.U. states to overinvolve the E.U. in bilateral issues with Russia.

"A very alarming tendency is the use of European solidarity to promote the interests of separate members," Medvedev said.
