BRUSSELS (AFP)--Russian President Dmitry Medvedev confirmed Tuesday that he gave the order to halt the offensive against Georgia, in a call with E.U. foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Solana's spokeswoman said.
"The Russian president confirmed his decision to Mr Solana to stop military operations in Georgia," the spokeswoman told AFP.
"Mr Solana welcomed this decision, underlining the importance of peace and stability in the region and said that the European Union was ready to actively contribute to a solution to the crisis
