Russia's state-controlled gas company OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) is considering building a new transit pipeline through Romania, the company said Friday.
At a meeting in Moscow, Gazprom Chief Executive Alexei Miller discussed the issue of constructing a new transit pipeline across Romania with the heads of Romania's pipeline operator Transgaz SA and gas firm Romgaz SA.
Issues such as underground gas storage and issues and developing existing transit capacities were also discussed, Gazprom said.
A Gazprom delegation will travel to Romania soon to continue discussions, Gazprom said.
Russia is seeking more support for its planned South Stream pipeline project, which will transport gas across the Black Sea from Russia to Southeastern Europe.
The South Stream rivals the Nabucco pipeline project, which is backed by the European Union, as it seeks to reduce its energy dependence on Russia.
