State-run Korea Resources Corp., or Kores, is seeking to take a stake in a large uranium mine in Kazakhstan this year, said a Kores official Monday.

Kores is also looking to acquire stakes in uranium and copper mines in Africa, South America, Russia and Canada, said the official, who declined to be named.

Kores' President Shin-Jong Kim is expected to visit Kazakhstan late this month to meet with officials from state-run Kazatomprom and discuss the stake purchase, the Korea Economic Daily reported Monday.

The government is aiming to increase the country's self-sufficiency ratio for minerals to 32% by 2012 from the current 18.5%.
