Russia is seeking a stake in the Belene nuclear power plant being built in northern Bulgaria, the RIA Novosti news agency reports Monday, citing Sergei Kiriyenko, head of the Russian state-run civilian nuclear power corporation Rosatom.

"If Bulgaria announces a tender for its stake in the Belene NPP, we'll participate in it," Ria Novosti quotes Kiriyenko as saying in an interview with a Bulgarian newspaper.

The power plant is being built by Russia's state nuclear power equipment and service export monopoly AtomStroyExport.

Earlier this month, Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov said Bulgaria was considering selling part of its 51% share in the plant. German utility RWE AG (RWE.XE) holds the remaining 49%.
