Carbon emissions must begin to fall within 10 years if the world is to
meet targets on limiting temperature rises, the BBC reports on its Web site
Thursday, citing research from the U.K. Meteorological Office.
The research found that the earlier global emissions peak and begin to decline,
the gentler that decline will be.
Emissions peaking in 2018 and shrinking 4% a year after that would give a 50%
chance of keeping warming below two degrees Celsius, the Met Office said, but
if the peak came in 2020 the decline would then have to be 5% a year for the
same odds of staying below two degrees.
"If you go to 2025 before peaking, it's virtually impossible to stay under
two degrees," said Vicky Pope, head of climate science at the Met Office,
adding meeting a lower target of 1.5 degrees favored by some developing
countries is virtually impossible.
