WASHINGTON (AFP)--The Senate will likely approve a comprehensive package of tough new economic sanctions against
Iran, but not until next year, a Senate ally of President Barack Obama said Thursday.
Asked about the prospects the Senate could pass such a measure, Sen. Dick Durbin said: "I think there's a good chance for that and I think there'd be strong bipartisan support."
But asked whether action could come this year, Durbin, the Senate's second-ranking Democrat, shook his head and replied: "No."
The Senate seems likely to remain busy with legislation to enact Obama's top domestic priority of health care reform, for the rest of 2009, and must also approve annual government spending packages
