German government officials have invited representatives from utility
companies and key ministries to meet in
Berlin
Jan.
21 to discuss nuclear energy policy, people familiar with the plans said
Tuesday.
A spokesman for utility RWE AG (RWE.XE) confirmed that the company had received
an invitation from Chancellor Angela Merkel's office, but declined to discuss
specifics of the planned meeting. Representatives for E.ON AG (EOAN.XE) and
Vattenfall Europe AG (VTT-XE) declined to comment. EnBW Energie
Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (EBK.XE) wasn't immediately available to comment.
Merkel's government wants to scrap a law that says all of the country's 17
nuclear power plants must be closed by 2022. The center-right parties that
formed a new coalition under Merkel's leadership in October would like to at
least extend the deadline until renewable energy sources can be expanded.
