Russian gas firm OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) will buy 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan in 2011, the company said Thursday.
Gazprom has already agreed to buy 1 billion cubic meters from Azerbaijan this year--double the planned volume--the head of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, or Socar, Rovnaq Abdullayev said earlier this month.
The European Union is also trying to secure gas supplies from Azerbaijan for its Nabucco gas pipeline project, which will carry Central Asian gas to Europe bypassing Russia.
