Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil ASA (STO) said Wednesday it was the highest bidder on 20 oil and gas exploration leases in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
The new leases make the company one of the largest leaseholders in the highly prospective deep water areas offshore the U.S.

"The lease sales are important events for us to high-grade our portfolio
and to acquire new promising acreage," said Helen Butcher, Statoil's
exploration manager for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
"We have concentrated our efforts in and around areas where we already
have promising exploration leads and prospects."
Statoil said its winning bids are subject to review and final government
approval.
