France and Kuwait on Friday signed an agreement on co-operating in the development of civil nuclear energy, the French prime minister's office said in a statement.

The accord will cover areas like electricity production, the desalinization of sea water and the management of nuclear waste, the statement said.

French energy companies are looking to sell nuclear reactor technology abroad. Last year, a group of French companies including Areva SA (CEI.FR), Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR), GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) and Total SA (TOT) lost out to a Korean-led consortium for a contract to build four nuclear reactors in the
United Arab Emirates .
