Climate change, the speedy shift to a low-carbon economy and energy efficiency will be key priorities for the new coalition government, the U.K. 's new Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said Friday.

Liberal Democrat Huhne, who is being joined by Conservatives Charles Hendry and Greg Barker who will take up ministerial portfolios, said he would work hard internationally to get a global deal on climate change.

"Climate change is the greatest threat to our common future. We have a very short period of time to tackle the problem before it becomes irreversible and out of control," Huhne said.

"A lot of progress has been made, but we must now go further, faster and turn targets into real change," he said.

Huhne said he intended to make decisions "put off for too long" to fundamentally change how energy is supplied and consumed in
Britain , including a goal to make it easier for people to make their homes more energy efficient and give the power industry more confidence to invest in low-carbon energy projects.

"Together we have the opportunity to make this the greenest government in our history. And to put energy security, for too long a second order issue, at the heart of the
U.K. 's national security strategy," Huhne said.
