It is still too soon to know what role unconventional natural gas will
be able to play in the European Union's energy mix, the European Commission
President Jose Manuel Barroso said Wednesday.
"It is too soon to have a complete assessment, that is why we are now
gathering information and experience," Barroso said during a press
conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk after the two met in
Brussels
. "The
results of these assessments will determine the future role of unconventional
gas in
Europe
," Barroso said.
Poland
is
one of the most promising countries for the potential development of
unconventional gas--usually known as shale gas, which is tightly trapped in
rocks underground--in
Europe
. This type of gas accounts
for roughly half of the U.S. domestic gas production, but analysts say
prospects aren't as bright for Europe, where there isn't yet a clear estimate
of unconventional gas resources.
