Algeria brought online six gas-fuelled power stations generating 2,000 megawatts of electricity in 2009, the head of the state-owned utility company Sonelgaz said Monday. The power stations were built at a cost of $6 billion as part of a 2006 emergency plan to satisfy rising electricity demand in the North African country, Noureddine Boutarfa told Algerian public radio. "Today, Algeria has sufficient means of production until 2012," when new power stations will start operating, Boutarfa said. Sonelgaz's target is to satisfy domestic demand but during hours when Algeria 's electricity demand is low, "there are export opportunities" notably to Morocco , Boutarfa said.
