Shale gas won't replace conventional gas in
Europe
, but
it will play a complementary role, the European commissioner for energy said
Thursday.
"It makes sense to look at shale gas as a complement, but it isn't the
magical cure," Guenther Oettinger said during a conference on the future
of energy in
Europe
.
He said development of technology for the extraction of shale gas--which is
becoming very popular in the
U.S.
--would
be very costly, and will face big problems of acceptance.
Oettinger also said the European Union needs a more coordinated approach, as
well as better funding, to develop nuclear fusion to produce energy.
"It is worth it for the benefit of our children to continue develop this
project," he said.
