BP PLC (BP, BP.LN) said Monday that its efforts to remove a sealing cap
and replace the blow-out preventer at the well that unleashed the Deepwater
Horizon spill are on hold due to inclement weather in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
The company said in a statement on its website that operations will resume as
soon as high seas subside and sea states reach "acceptable levels."
BP needs to remove the cap that it placed atop the well to contain the spill on
July 15, as well as a damaged blow-out preventer sitting on top of the well,
before it can place a new blow-out preventer on the spot. The new blow-out
preventer is needed because officials are concerned that the final steps to
kill the well--which involve pumping mud and cement from the bottom--could
compromise the cement plug that the company installed in early August at the
top of the well.
