The U.K. is on track to meet its 2020 renewable energy targets as
reforms of the regime to connect green power projects to the transmission
system have streamlined and sped up the process, U.K. power and natural gas
network operator National Grid PLC (NG.LN) said in a report published Monday.
According to National Grid's quarterly update report on connections, a total of
31.95 gigawatts of existing and proposed renewable generation have agreements
in place to be connected to the grid by 2020.
Currently, 4.95 gigawatts of renewable power is linked to the grid and an
additional 27 gigawatts of projects have connection agreements, the report
said.
However, the report warned that it will still be a challenge to meet the
targets.
"This is a great step forward, but we must not underestimate how big a challenge
it will be to deliver," said National Grid executive director Nick Winser.
"We need the timely planning consents and the right market frameworks to
make sure enough of these proposed projects get built. Inevitably some will not
go ahead as currently planned and so we will continue to work hard with all
developers of renewable sources to help bring more projects forward,"
Winser said.
The
U.K.
has a
binding European Union target to get 15% of its total energy mix from
renewables by 2020 from around 3% now.
To reach that goal, the
U.K.
would
have to source around a third of its electricity, or around 29 gigawatts, from
renewables as it will be harder to increase renewable heat and green transport
as quickly over the next 10 years.
