European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will visit Turkey Thursday for preparations ahead of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers, European officials based in Turkey said.

Ashton is scheduled to hold talks in
Istanbul , where a second round of negotiations between Iran and the so-called 5+1 group will take place later this month, the sources said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said the second round will be held on Jan. 21-22, while Ashton's office has given Jan. 20 as a tentative date for the start of the talks.

Negotiations between
Iran and the six powers--the U.K. , China , France , Russia , the U.S. and Germany --spearheaded by Ashton, resumed in Geneva in December after a 14-month hiatus.

Iran insists its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes but the U.S. and its allies suspect that the Islamic republic is secretly developing an atomic bomb.
