Turkmenistan may open up "very large" natural gas reserves to Europe , as the continent seeks new supply routes from the Caspian region, the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, said Friday.

"
Turkmenistan may open up very large gas reserves to Europe ," Barroso said in an interview with the Azerbaijani television channels on ahead of a meeting with Turkmenistan 's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.

Barroso is on a two-day visit to Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, aiming to secure Caspian Sea gas supplies for European Union countries through the Nabucco gas pipeline project, which aims to ship 30 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe annually.

The EU is mainly targeting gas from the second phase of
Azerbaijan 's Shah Deniz field to supply Nabucco, but is also looking at Turkmenistan 's vast reserves.

Turkmen officials last year suggested a pipeline could be build across the
Caspian Sea to feed the Nabucco pipeline.
