Barroso said in an interview with the Azerbaijani television channels on ahead
of a meeting with
Turkmenistan
's
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.
Barroso is on a two-day visit to Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, aiming to secure
Caspian Sea gas supplies for European Union countries through the Nabucco gas
pipeline project, which aims to ship 30 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe
annually.
The EU is mainly targeting gas from the second phase of
Azerbaijan
's
Shah Deniz field to supply Nabucco, but is also looking at
Turkmenistan
's
vast reserves.
Turkmen officials last year suggested a pipeline could be build across the
Caspian
Sea
to feed the Nabucco pipeline.
