Greece must
redefine its energy mix for electricity production under the current
economic conditions and turn its attention to natural gas and
developments around the world in nuclear technology, according to a
report by the Energy Committee of the Academy of Athens, the country’s
top culture and science institution.
The report, issued yesterday, said
the new energy mix must take into account growth and the creation of new
jobs in the present financial climate, as well as energy safety.
The
committee branded the planned use of renewable energy sources for
electricity production (40 percent) by 2020 as particularly expensive
and disputes the chances of the plan’s realization. It then recommended
the rational use of lignite to ensure maximum performance, as well as
the country’s participation in research and pilot projects on carbon
capture and storage (CCS) technologies, and the monitoring of
developments in nuclear technology for electricity production to achieve
a broader social approval.
