A series of massive explosions Wednesday erupted into fireballs near an oil facility outside the Libyan rebel-held town of Ras Lanuf , where a mechanic said a pipeline was blown up.

"I know for sure that what they blew up was an oil pipe. I know the whole line by heart," said Ali al-Aguri, an oil company mechanic who works at another plant further away from the As Sidra facility.

A series of explosions, followed by huge flames leaping hundreds of meters into the sky were seen and heard by an AFP reporter about five kilometers west of Ras Lanuf, a strategic oil town on the Mediterranean coast.

The fire could be seen raging in the area of an oil facility. Every few minutes, another ball of flames shot up into the sky. A constant inferno of fierce flames could be seen at the foot of the cloud of black smoke.
