An earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 struck 72 miles west-southwest of Tokyo at a shallow depth, the U.S. Geological Survey reported Tuesday.

The quake occurred at 10:31 p.m. local time at a depth of six-tenths of a mile, the USGS said. Shizuoka is the closest city to the quake's epicenter.
