Radiation levels in the air in downtown
Tokyo
fell
slightly Monday, while no radioactive iodine was detected in samples of the
city's water.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government said on its website Monday that radiation
levels in downtown
Tokyo
stood
at 0.108 microsievert an hour at about 0900 GMT. That is lower than 0.114
microsievert an hour at 0900 GMT Sunday, but higher than the 0.035 microsievert
an hour a person typically would be exposed to in downtown
Tokyo
due
to background radiation.
A chest X-ray typically exposes the patient to a radiation dose of about 100
microsieverts, according to the Radiological Society of North America.
Separately, the city said samples taken earlier in the day from three purifying
plants that provide tap water to the
Tokyo
area
showed radioactive iodine was not detected.
Last week,
Tokyo
officials had warned parents not to give
Tokyo
water
to young babies, as radioactive iodine reading stayed above 100 becquerels per
kilogram--the level considered the maximum acceptable for infants.
