Qatar
and the
U.S.
have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop clean energy, the two
countries said in a joint statement Wednesday.
Under the agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy and the Qatar Science
and
Technology
Park
, the two countries "will exchange scientific and technical
information and undertake joint research" in everything from solar energy,
carbon capture, energy storage and water treatment, the statement said.
"By bringing our scientists and engineers together to pursue joint
research, we'll be able to develop the next generation of clean energy
technologies more quickly," U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman
said in the statement.
Qatar
is investing billions of dollars into scientific research as it looks
to wean its dependency away from oil and gas and diversify its economy.
Qatar
's Science and
Technology
Park
is a government funded research hub home to a number of large corporations
including Microsoft and Exxon Mobil.
