The French government confirmed to all companies concerned that the
scientific study about the environmental impact from shale gas and oil
extracting will be carried on and even prolonged, the Energy Ministry said
Monday.
Last week, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said that the exploration
permits that had been already granted would be scrapped as they had been awarded
in "unclear" conditions and that the entire issue should be reviewed
from the start.
Fillon also said that the scientific mission, which had been decided two months
earlier, would be maintained, even though the National Assembly is to debate a
draft proposal to totally ban shale gas and oil extractions on May 10.
The companies last week got the confirmation the permits have been
"suspended" and were asked to take part in the scientific study, a
ministry spokesman said. The mission has been prolonged to deepen the
scientific study, he also said, without elaborating over the new calendar for
the report's publication.
The study was initially expected to be released by June, with preliminary
conclusions expected by mid-April.
