A rise in well control incidents to 28 in 2010 from 11 in 2008 and a continued high number of gas leaks in 2010 need to be tackled in a more purposeful manner to reverse the trend, the Petroleum Saftey Authority Norway said Wednesday.

Fourteen gas leaks occurred during 2010, the same number as in 2008 and just one less than in 2009, but there were no fatal accidents on the Norwegian Continental Shelf last year, the PSA said in its 2010 report on risk levels in petroleum activity.

The total indicator for major accidents on fixed installations and mobile units has flattened out over the past five to six years, the state-run safety body said.

"A more purposeful and not least continuous effort is required to change this trend," Magne Ognedal, director-general of the PSA said in a statement.

"It's very important that the industry comes up with good measures for reversing this development," Ognedal said.

The energy industry is Norway's largest industry.
