Iraq has signed an initial agreement with its neighbor, Iran, to supply 25 million cubic feet a day of natural gas, a spokesman for the Iraqi electricity ministry said Monday.

Mussab al-Mudaris said the agreement, signed by the Iraqi electricity ministry
and
Iran
's oil
ministry, would involve building gas pipeline to connect the Sadr power plant
in
Baghdad
and
the Al-Quds power plant outside the capital with a gas production facility in
Iran
.
"Construction of the pipeline will take 18 months and the agreement is to
supply gas in accordance with world gas prices for a period of five
years," Mudaris said.
The Sadr and Al-Quds power plants are designed to produce some 2,500 megawatts.
The agreement requires official ratification by the Iraqi cabinet and
parliament, he said.
