U.K. supermajor BP PLC (BP.LN) can still play a major role in Russia despite the collapse of its share swap deal with state-owned oil giant OAO Rosneft (ROSN.RS), the Guardian reports Monday, citing an interview with one of President Dmitry Medvedev's key economic advisers.

Arkady Dvorkovich denied that BP's failure to win the backing of its partners in its existing Russian venture TNK-BP Ltd. for the Rosneft deal had frustrated the Kremlin. While the collapse of the Arctic exploration and share swap agreement was regrettable, it wasn't something that should be expected to blight the company's future in
Russia , said Dvorkovich, cited by the paper.

"It was not about politics but a business deal and it did not happen. But BP is one of the biggest Russian partners in the energy sector and we expect it to continue to play a major role in
Russia and elsewhere," said Dvorkovich.
