European governments gave their final green light Tuesday to plans aimed
at increasing the safety of nuclear waste in the European Union, putting an end
to years-long negotiations.
"After years of inaction, the EU for the very first time commits itself to
a final disposal of nuclear waste," said Energy Commissioner Guenther
Oettinger in a statement. "The EU becomes the most advanced region for the
safe management of radioactive waste and spent fuel," he added.
According to the new rules, each EU country will have to draft a program for
the storage and the disposal of nuclear waste that will have to show how the
plans will be financed and who will be responsible for them. Member countries
will also have to set up an independent authority to oversee the thorough
implementation of the program.
