The first line of Nord Stream, which will bring Russian natural gas through the
Baltic Sea
to
Europe
, is
expected to start pumping commercial gas by October, and is designed to have a
throughput capacity of 27.5 billion cubic meters a year.
The 1,200-kilometer pipeline is intended to reduce
Russia
's
dependence on transit countries
Ukraine
and
Belarus
, with
whom Gazprom had a numerous disputes in the past.
The total pipeline's capacity is planned to be 55 billion cubic meters of gas a
year, when the second line is launched late 2012.
The project is controlled by Gazprom with BASF SE's (BAS.XE) Wintershall AG,
E.ON Ruhrgas AG, Nederlandse Gasunie NV and GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) as minority
shareholders.
