All the 14 European Union countries that operate nuclear plants have
submitted a progress report on safety checks of their sites to the European
Commission, a spokeswoman for the commission said Friday.
"We are on track with our schedule of stress tests," Marlene Holzner,
spokeswoman for energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger, said during a regular
press briefing. "We have received the national progress reports of all the
14 member states which are operating nuclear power plants; that means that all
143 nuclear plants in the EU are now being assessed," she explained.
The EU decided earlier this year to assess the safety of its nuclear plants
according to common guidelines by running stress tests, after the Japanese
nuclear scare following the March earthquake and tsunami.
