Noble Energy reported today the discovery of natural gas in its Aphrodite well in Cyprus ’s exclusive economic zone. According to the company, the first data from the well show that the size of the field could be 30-40% bigger than previously calculated. Although the drill hasn’t yet reached the depth of the gas field itself, Noble and the Cypriot government are very optimistic and satisfied with the progress so far.

According to the newspaper “Phileleftheros”, the Cypriot president, Mr. Christofias, is going to visit the platform this week, in order to proceed with the first gas flaring. However, petroleum geologists spoke to Energia.gr and said that data are still preliminary at this point and are not enough to determine the size of the natural gas field.

Noble Energy is satisfied with the discovery, but at the same time, the company appears worried about the government’s delay in completing the deal about commercial production and exportation of the natural gas.
