Varujan Vosganian, president of the energy commission within the Romanian senate, said today that Romania needs annual investments of approximately EUR 3-4 billion in the energy sector, while the Government can only cover a third of these costs.

This statement was made today, during the inauguration of a EUR 90 million Telecontrol center by Enel Romania. This new system will allow a better management of disruptions in the electricity distribution, bringing better services to end consumers.

Vosganian, a former minister of Economy, and head of the privatization commission that supervised the privatization of Electrica Muntenia to the Italian company Enel, also added that "the Romanian energy needs to become the flagship of Romania's economic modernization".

"In the energy sector, the state should act only as a regulator, leaving the rest to the private companies", added Vosganian.

Vosganian considers Enel to be a success story in the energy domain, concluding that foreign investment has brought money, technology and performance in the Romanian economy.
