The European Union shouldn't threaten to ban imports of Iranian crude oil as part of sanctions against the country's nuclear program because it will ultimately prove damaging to the oil industry, Ibrahim Al Ibrahim, economic adviser to the Emir of Qatar, said Tuesday.
The European Union shouldn't threaten to ban imports of Iranian crude oil as part of sanctions against the country's nuclear program because it will ultimately prove damaging to the oil industry, Ibrahim Al Ibrahim, economic adviser to the Emir of Qatar, said Tuesday.

"Energy shouldn't be used for political purposes," he said on the sidelines of the World Petroleum Congress in
Doha , Qatar . The Arab oil embargo in 1973, in response to Western support for Israel , was a misguided politicization of oil supply and "now consuming countries are using energy for political purposes.

"This isn't good for the energy industry, it isn't good for the exporting countries, it isn't good for the consuming countries," said Al Ibrahim, who is one of the architects of
Qatar 's industrial development and modernization.
