Israel and Cyprus may consider linking their power grids, according to the head of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority.
The review follows a proposal by Israel’s Energy and Water Minister Uzi Landau, Giorgos Shammas, the authority’s president, said in a telephone interview on Thursday.
“So far no decision has been taken,” Shammas said. ‘‘It has to be established first whether such a project is technically possible and financially viable.”
Landau’s spokesman Chen Ben-Lulu confirmed that connecting the two nations’ power grids was among the ideas discussed during a recent visit by Landau to Cyprus. Landau accompanied Israel’s President Shimon Peres on a visit to the Eastern Mediterranean island in November.
Linking the Cyprus power grid to another “could help the system operate more smoothly,” Shammas said.
